An Article on Cyberspace

“Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts… A graphical representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the non-space of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding.”

The idea of a dimension having mystical effect on our own dimension is quite old. Sometimes the dimensional gateway would be a mirror or book. A computer screen is both of these.Cyberspace just puts a modern spin on the idea.Rather than go Down the Rabbit Hole into a Spirit World, the character puts on some VR goggles, plugs an Ethernet cable into his skull, or gets “digitized” into data. What do they see when they go online? A pretty nifty 3D world, designed as a Viewer-Friendly Interface made up of Holographic Terminals over a background full of Matrix Raining Code superimposed over Tron Lines. Not only is everything online, you can expect “surfing” from one site/database to another to be handled with all the aesthetic aplomb of a Design Student’s Orgasm and to be completely lagless. One curious alternative idea that seems to infest many cyberspaces is travel time… The Metaverse of Snow Crash has people walking to the shops on The Internet. This could be seen as the illogical conclusion to the increasingly graphical user interface design evolution from the concise but user-unfriendly command line to drag-and-drop windows and pointers and presumably to the final stages where your avatar crumples up your virtual document and walks over to the virtual bin with it. People in the future clearly have a phenomenal amount of patience with their user interfaces. Essentially, Cyberspace is stylized into a simulation that’svirtually indistinguishable from real life, and less of a recreational pastime or tool.If there are other webizens or hackers in cyberspace (not to mention AI’s and ghosts), they will either be amorphous gobs of light, be completely outlandishly dressed (or have non-human avatars) because there are no physical limitations, or appear exactly as they would in real life (even wearing the street clothes they were wearing as they logged on).Sometimes, a Holodeck Malfunction turns Cyberspace outright dangerous — not just online, but in real life, because Your Mind Makes It Real. It may take anOrphean Rescue to get those trapped out.

Frequently pops up in Cyberpunk and Post Cyberpunk settings. See also The Metaverse, which is when society at large uses the Internet this way. ComparePlatonic Cave. Also compare Hard Light, where Cyberspace can manipulate the physical world.

An article on the Cyberpunk Genre

“I never asked for this…”
“Transhumanism is about how technology will eventually help us overcome the problems that have, up until now, been endemic to human nature. Cyberpunk is about how technology won’t.”

— Stephenls of RPG.Net, on the relation between transhumanism and cyberpunk

“Cyberpunk is a Speculative Fiction genre centered around the transformative effects of advanced science, information technology, computers and networks (“cyber”) coupled with a breakdown or radical change in the social order (“punk”). A genre that is dark and cynical in tone, it borrows elements from Film Noir, hard-boiled detective fiction and postmodern deconstruction to describe the Dystopian side of an electronic society.

The plot will more than likely take place Twenty Minutes into the Future in some City Noir, Industrial Ghetto orCrapsack World that tends to be marked by crime, cultural nihilism and bad weather, where we use cutting-edge tech less for making a shining utopia and more for the sake of selfish profit and pleasure. Heroes are often computer hackers or rebellious antiheroes, while major villains are almost inevitably multinational conglomerates or Police States (or both).

If the work dates from the 1980s, there’s a good chance that there will be a theme of Japanese economic dominance, with the evil corporations being sinister zaibatsu (possibly masterminded behind the scenes by yakuza) and Japanese-sounding brand-names liberally scattered around. Many anime have at least a hint, perhaps due to the fact that Japan is closer to actually being cyberpunk, with many relevant animators being critical of Japanese consumer culture.

Expect the philosophy of Trans Humanism to be a feature, what with Artificial Limbs and cable jacks in the skull that lead to artificial realities. Artificial intelligences, artificial humans and insane cyborgs roam the earth, Philosophical and existentialist questions on transhumanist possibilities like “what is identity” and “What Measure Is a Non-Human?” are explored, and Everything is Online.

The genre’s vision of a troubled future is often called the antithesis of the generally utopian visions of the future popular in the 1940s and 1950s, but keep in mind that it is not a term that should be applied to every Speculative Fiction dystopia or Bad Future ever in the history of the genre, and does not need to always have ananvilicious Science Is Bad message to it.”
